Elizabeth Gausden, M.D., M.P.H. is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in helping patients return to active, pain-free lives through expert hip and knee care. She is an Attending Orthopedic Surgeon at Hospital for Special Surgery, an Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College, and an Associate Orthopedic Surgeon at New York Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Gausden performs more than 600 hip and knee joint replacement procedures each year and has years of experience taking care of everything from the routine to the most complex of hip and knee problems.
She focuses on primary and revision joint replacement, adult lower extremity reconstruction, and orthopedic trauma. Dr. Gausden believes in treating the whole person, not just the X-ray. She works closely with each patient to create an individualized care plan, making sure you feel informed, supported, and confident in your treatment choices.
To offer the latest surgical options and support an individualized recovery, Dr. Gausden utilizes advanced techniques. This includes robotic-assisted surgery with Mako, the muscle-preserving anterior and STAR approaches for hip replacement, and the cosmetically refined "bikini" incision for select patients. Her dual fellowship training—in hip and knee reconstruction at the Mayo Clinic and orthopedic trauma at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston—gives her specialized expertise in complex issues like periprosthetic fractures and post-traumatic arthritis, revision surgery, and post-traumatic deformity.
Dr. Gausden is deeply committed to advancing her field. Recognized as a "Rising Star" in orthopedic surgery by Becker’s Spine Review, she has authored over 140 journal articles and actively researches how to improve patient recovery and compare robotic versus manual techniques, as well as outcomes following joint replacement and periprosthetic fractures. She earned her medical degree from Weill Cornell Medical College, where she was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, and a Master of Public Health from Harvard University, completing her residency at the prestigious Hospital for Special Surgery, where she was honored for her dedication to patient care and teaching with the Jean McDaniel Resident Mentorship Award.
Dr. Gausden sees patients at the Hospital for Special Surgery on the Upper East Side of Manhattan as well as at HSS Brooklyn in Sunset Park.
